Testing a desktop bar code scanner
If you are concerned that your desktop bar code scanner (non-portable, USB device) might not be operating correctly, perform the following steps:
1. Make sure that your bar code scanner is connected to your computer and all necessary drivers are installed (Many operating systems automatically detect and install drivers for most desktop scanners upon connection).
2. Open Windows Notepad. Click on Start » Programs » Accessories » Notepad.
3. With Notepad open, scan a bar code.
4. Notepad should display the number associated with the bar code. If so, your bar code scanner is working properly.
